New system for energy efficiency introduced for Turkish buildings

The Energy Efficiency Consultancy, or EVD, presented a new system to calculate the energy efficiency of buildings during a press meeting on Tuesday. The new system, which will be in effect on July 1, will enable Turkey to save more energy. Speaking during the meeting, Ergin Kaya, managing director of EVD, said, “Turkey is 75 percent dependent on foreign sources, amounting to $35 billion per year. However, it is possible to save 40 percent of the energy used in buildings, amounting to nearly $6 billion per year.” Recalling the abundance of studies in energy efficiency, Kaya said there are still obstacles in this area. “Financial problems, inflation and legislation problems are the key obstacles in front of energy efficiency,” he said. The program developed to enhance energy efficiency has been created with input from more than 25 specialists, said Kaya. “First of all, buildings have to have a building identification card, and all the data in those cards will be downloaded to the system,” he said. “All the energy evaluation of these buildings will be based on three main parameters: architecture physics, mechanics and lightning.” The new system is expected to provide 10,000 jobs. “There will be energy managers, energy identification card specialists and other consultancy companies,” said Kaya. “A building can save energy from its insulation, lightning systems.” While newly constructed buildings will have to have these identification cards now, old buildings have until 2017 to install them.
